Serif bold and sans-serif bold
Bold is the serif version, with little feet on the letters. Sans-serif bold is plainer and tends to look closer to the bold in social media apps. Both include digits, so dates and numbers come out bold too.
Bold italic
The bold italic styles combine both. They stand out the most, which also makes them tiring to read in bulk. Use them for a word or two.
Use real bold when you have it
If the place you are writing in has a bold button, a shortcut such as Ctrl and B, or Markdown with double asterisks, use that instead. Real bold keeps the text as ordinary text, which is better for search, spell check and screen readers.
How it stays bold
The bold is part of the characters themselves, so it survives copy and paste into almost any app. That is the whole point, and also the catch: the text is no longer plain letters.
Questions
Why does bold text not appear in search results for my name?
Because the letters are different characters. A search for ordinary letters does not match mathematical bold letters.
Which style looks most like normal bold?
Sans-serif bold, in most places that use a sans-serif font for everything.
Does it work for numbers?
Yes. All four bold styles have bold digits.
