Serif italic and sans-serif italic
Italic uses a serif design and sans-serif italic a plain one. Both slant to the right. Add bold with the bold italic versions.
Italic has no digits
Unicode has italic letters but no italic numbers, so digits stay upright. If your text has dates or prices, they will not slant. The bold italic styles do have digits, but they are bold, not italic.
The odd lowercase h
In serif italic, the small h is stored as the Planck constant sign, a symbol that was already in Unicode before italic letters were added. It looks like an italic h, and it is what keeps that letter from showing as an empty box.
Use real italics when you can
A normal italic setting or Markdown asterisks keep your text as ordinary letters. The slanted characters here are for places where nothing else is available.
Questions
Why are my numbers not italic?
Unicode has no italic digits, so there is nothing to convert them to.
What is the difference between italic and oblique?
Italic is a separately drawn slanted design. Oblique is the upright letters tilted. These characters are drawn as italics.
Will an italic word in a sentence look right?
Usually. Fonts differ a little in size, so the italic word may sit slightly higher or lower than the words around it.
